OUR STORY
Cleardale Station is a 1400ha sheep and beef station situated in the Rakaia Gorge, New Zealand. Running Merino, English Leicester, Halfbred and Quarterbred studs as well as an Angus stud.

We are dedicated to not only developing our stud but also the locality and industry.
1914
RC Todhunter (great grandfather) & John Montgomery purchased Blackford original property
1924
RC Todhunter founded Blackford Stud – original merino stud.
1943
JR Todhunter (grandfather) purchased Cleardale – next door to Blackford
1952
RCT died and passed Blackford to daughters. JRT purchased 1/3 from Kit his sister. Margaret the other sister farmed her share and when sold refused to sell to JRT who had the finances organized at the time!
1953 - 2000
Cleardale added to over the years - Little River Block and (family) Steephill Block.
1999 Blackford block purchased 192ha
2008
Blackford homestead block 93ha purchased.
2010
Installation of 1Mega Watt power station & irrigation of 91ha at Cleardale.
2011
Irrigation of 51ha
2012
Lease of 148ha of Montrose
2013
Shareholder in Southern Cross Sheep Ltd
Purchase of share in Mt Hutt Forestry partnership
2014
Installation of 69ha joint venture pivot with Montrose estates
2015
Started winter grazing cows at Manuka Point Station.
2017
Purchase of 145ha Rakaia Gorge Property Sri Taniwha
2018
Purchase of half share in Joint Venture pivot
Boundary adjustment with neighbouring Redcliffs Station
2021
Purchase of High Bare Peak, Little River with other shareholders as a private conservation project. First annual SX Fine Wool ram sale.
2022
First annual Cleardale Angus Bull sale
